About Carl Sorensen (ScubaBC.ca)
I’m Carl Sorensen, an underwater videographer and divemaster based on Vancouver Island.
Diving had been on my bucket list since I was a kid, but life, business, kids, and other responsibilities, kept it out of reach for a while. That changed in March 2021, right at the start of the pandemic. I can't remember what spurred the moment at the time but I signed up for an Open Water course at a local dive shop with my wife and two oldest sons. I haven’t looked back since.
What started as a personal milestone quickly turned into a passion. I was diving frequently and trying to explain the experience to friends and family, but words never quite captured it, so I picked up a GoPro and just started filming.
A year later, I realized I needed better tools to do the underwater world justice. I upgraded to a Sony A7S III, housed in an Aquatica Digital underwater housing, with multiple Kraken Sports video lights and an Anglerfish monitor for framing my shots. My lens and port setup includes:
-
- Sony 16–35mm f/4
- Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro
- Laowa 10mm f/2.8 Ultra-Wide
- Aquatica macro port with +5 and +10 diopters
- Aquatica 8" acrylic dome port
- Aquatica 9.25" glass dome port
Since then, I’ve logged nearly 1,000 cold water dives in places like Nanoose, Nanaimo, Barkley Sound, and Browning Passage, capturing the beauty and biodiversity of British Columbia's underwater world.
